Rest day cancelled: what's it worth?
Three questions. The answer comes from the Police Regulations, worked out the same way the SHFTRS app does it.
The rules it uses
- Short notice means you were told with fewer than 15 clear days to go. Neither the day you were told nor the rest day itself counts. Told on the 1st for a rest day on the 16th is 14 clear days, so it's short notice. You're paid time and a half: 3/64 of a day's pay for every completed 15 minutes.
- 15 clear days or more isn't paid extra. You get another rest day instead, and you should be told which day within four days of being told you're needed.
- Minimum 4 hours. A short-notice rest day under 4 hours is paid as 4 hours, unless it was an hour or less and came straight after the end of a normal scheduled shift.
- A day's pay is your yearly basic salary ÷ 52 ÷ 5. London weighting and other allowances aren't included. Only completed 15 minutes count, and all figures are before tax.
- Time off instead. Within 28 days you can choose time off at time and a half instead of the money. Your force then has up to 3 months to give it to you.
- Travel. Time getting to and from work can count as duty too, within a limit your force sets, but not where travel and duty together go over 6 hours. It doesn't count towards the 4-hour minimum.
- If you asked to work it yourself, you get another rest day, not the allowance.
- Public holidays (Christmas Day, bank holidays and so on) have their own rules, so this calculator doesn't price them. What a bank holiday is worth.
- Inspectors and above don't get the allowance. If duty stops you having your rest days, you're owed a day off in its place within 12 months.
Based on Police Regulations 2003, Annex H (rest days and public holidays), paragraphs 1 and 3, and pay points from Annex F (from 1 September 2025). Counting clear days follows the Police Federation's guidance. Your force may apply a local agreement, and the rules on rest days are under review nationally, so check the date at the top.
Overtime, public holidays, TOIL and rest between shifts are in Quick regsPolice guides.
This is general guidance, not legal or financial advice, and it isn't a decision by your force. If the figure matters, check it with your Federation rep.
Every shift, worked out for you
SHFTRS works this out for every shift, automatically. It keeps your rota and every change to it, and tells you what you're owed. It's built by police, for police.
